Mission Statement
The Gender and Sexuality Center (GSC) offers resources and support on topics and identities related to the diversity of gender and sexuality, specifically centering resources and support for LGBTQIA+ people at Carleton. The GSC achieves this by working in collaborative partnership with students, staff, and faculty to strengthen and sustain a campus that welcomes people of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions.
Vision Statement
The Gender and Sexuality Center strives to grow a community that celebrates the dynamic experiences and contributions of LGBTQIA+ people at Carleton and beyond. The GSC will offer opportunities that inspire identity exploration and engage all students, staff & faculty in purposeful and sustainable dialogue around allyship, addressing complex intersections of identity, and self-reflection.
Guiding Principles
ADVOCACY – Dedicated to identifying and recommending opportunities that will promote the achievement, success, and inclusion of LGBTQIA+ people
CELEBRATION – Providing experiences that recognize and honor the history and excellence of LGBTQIA+ people and cultures
EDUCATION – Committed to leading efforts to advance the evolving conversations related to the diverse experiences, identities and scholarship of LGBTQIA+ people
INCLUSION – Fostering spaces that celebrate the value of various perspectives and experiences of LGBTQIA+ people and communities.
Some of the resources we provide to the Carleton community are:
Located in Clader House (209 East Second Street), the Gender and Sexuality Center is open Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm. The GSC helps support a dynamic campus community that recognizes, supports and celebrates sexual and gender diversity – specifically centering resources and services for LGBTQIA+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex, Asexual, Aromantic, and more) students. To accomplish this, the GSC hosts events, mentoring programs, speakers, and workshops.
The GSC also offers a comfortable space on campus where students can drop by anytime to browse through the library, grab resources, study, or to chat with the staff.
- Individual support
Staff in the GSC are available for individual support and advising. Talk helps! Contact us if you would like to chat. Gender and Sexuality Center Associates (GSCAs) are also available for peer support. The Q for Questioning program is another resource for students who are coming out and navigating their way on campus. The Queer Peer Mentor Program is also helpful for students interested in becoming more socially connected to the LGBTQIA+ community at Carleton. - Peer Education
We offer ongoing peer-led educational programs for students. This includes already created workshops or working in collaboration with our Campus Education & Resources team to create something unique to your community’s needs. The center houses a large collection of books, magazines, and videos related to gender and sexuality. These materials are available for check out. Stop by and browse through our library! - Meeting space
The center provides a comfortable meeting space for related student groups. This space is also available for students to simply hang out or study. The GSC can be reserved by contacting our staff. - Events
The GSC plans regular events, including annual events such as Transgender Day of Remembrance, Rainbow Retreat, and an annual Senior Celebration. All events are available on our calendar.
