The French and Francophone Studies Department sees language as an essential gateway to other cultures and other ways of being. Committed to helping students attain proficiency in the language sequence (FREN 101-204), the Department strives at all levels to introduce students to useful language skills as well as critical thinking and analysis.

Featuring study abroad programs in Paris (spring term every year) and Senegal (winter break in alternate years), we provide opportunities for students to immerse themselves in French or Senegalese culture, broadening their horizons both linguistically and personally.

We encourage all French students to continue to the advanced levels at Carleton, in which they develop facility with the French language and important critical skills that will be beneficial in future travels, careers, or studies.
