Christopher U. Light Lectureship: Abderrahmane Sissako
Please join us for the 2025 Christopher U. Light Lecture, featuring the renowned filmmaker, Abderrahmane Sissako. Mr. Sissako, the celebrated Mauritanian-born Malian film director and producer, will discuss his compelling body of work. His film Waiting for Happiness (Heremakono) was screened at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival official selection under Un Certain Regard, winning a FIPRESCI Prize. His 2006 film Bamako received much attention. Sissako's themes include globalisation, exile and the displacement of people. His 2014 film Timbuktu was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or in the main competition section at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival and nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
Mr. Sissako is visiting Carleton this week, presenting screenings of his films BLACK TEA and TIMBUKTU on September 29th and 30th, in addition to the Christopher U. Light Lecture about his work on October 2nd.
The Christopher U. Light Lectureship in Literature was created in 1984 (1985 for Art and Music) by Mr. Light, Carleton Class of 1958. Among his many interests, Mr. Light is a freelance writer and composer, a record producer and a musician with interests in computers and music.
