Punk and Pamphlets: Fighting the System

Fri, May 16, 2025 • 12:00pm - 1:00pm (1h) • LIBE 170
What do punk zines have in common with French pamphlets?

Join us on Friday, May 16th from 12-1 p.m. in LIBE 170 for Punk and Pamphlets, an event that dives into the rebellious history of underground publishing, vernacular print culture, and the evolution of communication technology. From subversive leaflets to DIY print movements, we’ll explore how people have long used the printed word to challenge authority and push boundaries.

Alongside this conversation, we’ll showcase recent acquisitions to Special Collections—including tintypes, daguerreotypes, 19th-century parlor games, woodcut tarot decks, contemporary artist books, and materials highlighting women in book history.

The event also features students from French 310: The Art of Scandal, presenting their research and translations of once-clandestine French pamphlets. Please note that the event will be held in English.
