I am writing to let you know about a summer immersion experience available for juniors (and exceptional sophomores) in your Molecular Genetics and/or Cell Biology courses whose backgrounds may make them less likely to have considered a PhD or research as a career. These include students from groups that have been historically underrepresented in the sciences, as well as those from economically or educationally disadvantaged families. The program is open to students enrolled at undergraduate-only institutions (such as the ACM Colleges), and the University of Chicago has specifically reached out to our consortium to encourage more of our high achieving students to apply.
With the assistance of a generous NSF grant, the University of Chicago runs a summer immersion experience during which undergraduates conduct independent research under the mentorship of graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and faculty, while also learning how to communicate about science with one another. The program offers a generous stipend, lodging, travel to/from Chicago, and a food assistance stipend.
The application is due February 1, 2017, and a copy is attached to this e-mail. An overview of the program can be found here:http://mgcb.bsd.uchicago.edu/reu/

If you have any questions about this program, please feel free to contact me or Aaron Turkewitz (apturkew@uchicago.edu), PI.
