19 November 2018Welcome to this year’s edition of the FOCUS Newsletter, inFOCUS!
As you know, FOCUS is a program that supports students who are interested in promoting diversity in science and math disciplines (also called “STEM” disciplines), both at Carleton and beyond. We strive to support students from groups traditionally underrepresented in STEM by ensuring that they are actively connecting with the tremendous array of resources available at Carleton, as well as opportunities off campus.

In the Spotlight!
19 November 2018FOCUS received a 2018 “Inspiring Programs in STEM” Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the largest and oldest diversity and inclusion publication in higher education. The award honors colleges and universities that encourage and assist students from underrepresented groups to enter the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Carleton’s FOCUS Program is featured in the September 2018 issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.

Mae Jemison Lands in Northfield
19 November 2018For a special event celebrating science at Carleton and the construction of the new science building, the college invited astronaut Dr. Mae Jemison to Carleton to give a special convocation talk. Her talk was titled “Exploring the Frontiers of Science and Human Potential” which discussed the importance of science education, and the increased participation of women and minorities in science and technology.
