CCCE SESQUICENTENNIAL FELLOWSHIP: NORTHFIELD ARTS AND CULTURE COMMISSION
The Northfield Arts & Culture Commission (ACC) is an official commission of the City of Northfield. Commissioners are appointed by mayoral recommendation to the City Council. The ACC was established to advise the city council on the development of arts and cultural activities, organizations and facilities in Northfield (reference: Ordinance No. 855).
The Carleton Fellow’s work would be related to the ACC’s poetry projects. The Chair of the ACC (Bonnie Jean Flom) and Northfield’s Poet Laureate (Rob Hardy) would be the key individuals from whom the Carleton Fellow would receive direction and feedback. Both individuals are eager to envision the possibilities with a Carleton Fellow as we strive to enhance our community’s ability to interact with the 55 poems that currently appear underfoot in over 200 Northfield locations. The current version of the interactive on-line Sidewalk Poetry map was developed by an intern working in the City of Northfield’s Engineering Office several years ago. By “clicking” on a poem on the map, the computer user can hear the poem being recited (most often by the poets themselves). The Carleton Fellow would be asked to update the online map and the accompanying recitations and make recommendations for its improvement. We would also like to explore optimizing the maps for iPad and iPhone so that the audio could be accessed while encountering the poems in concrete. We are certainly eager for the Carleton Fellow to offer enhancements to what we have envisioned, bringing to the project a fresh perspective and new possibilities. Updates to the tri-fold walking map would also be undertaken as part of this project. These maps are currently available in twenty downtown locations. The poems installed the summer and fall of 2016 have yet to be included in any of the available maps. Those updates could be carried out without delay. Since weather conditions dictate when the 2017 winning poems can be installed, we can’t be certain of their inclusion in the newly developed maps before the conclusion of the summer fellowship. But having the newspaper and online formats established will enable the ACC to readily add new poems. While the Sidewalk Poetry Project currently has a presence on social media,it would benefit greatly from an enhancement. It is hoped that the Carleton Fellow could provide leadership in this regard as we strive to reach a wider audience.
Responsibilities include: Update the electronic and tri-fold paper sidewalk poetry maps, tape the poems not yet included in the online interactive map, explore optimizing the maps for electronic tablets and smartphones so that the audio can be accessed while encountering poems on the sidewalks of Northfield upgrade and improve the presence of the Sidewalk Poetry project on social media communicate with the Chair of the ACC and Northfield’s Poet Laureate on an ongoing basis, attend organizational meetings, as requested.
