GI Bill®/Yellow Ribbon Benefits

Carleton College proudly participates in the GI Bill® and the Yellow Ribbon program.

The Post 9/11 GI Bill® pays for tuition and fee charges at eligible institutions of higher learning. The tuition and fees cap covered by the Post 9/11 GI Bill® is $28,937.09 for the 2024–25 academic year. Once that amount has been disbursed by the VA, any remaining tuition and fee charges for that term or subsequent terms are then eligible for the Yellow Ribbon Program. Carleton has committed to pay 50% of that remaining Yellow Ribbon eligible tuition and fee charges which is then matched by the VA. VA benefits are front-loaded so it’s likely that earlier terms may not have any Yellow Ribbon eligible tuition and fee charges.

The Registrar’s Office serves as the campus liaison with the Veterans’ Administration. Michael Decker is the Designated Officer for signing official VA forms related to eligibility and certification of enrollment for benefits. If you have any questions, please email Michael or call 507-222-4288.

In compliance with the requirements of 38 USC 3679(e), Carleton requires VA benefit eligible students to submit a certificate of eligibility along with any additional documents requested to the Registrar’s Office before any benefits can be disbursed. Carleton also commits not to impose any fees because of a late VA benefit disbursement.

Carleton also complies with the requirements of the Johnny Isakson and David P. Roe, M.D. Veterans Health Care and Benefits Improvement Act of 2020.

The Edith Nourse Rogers STEM Scholarship through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is for students training in the high demand STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) fields.

Recipients will receive up to nine months of additional Post-9/11 GI Bill® entitlement or a maximum of $30,000. Eligible Post-9/11 GI Bill® students must have either exhausted their entitlement or will exhaust their entitlement within 180 days. Eligibility for the scholarship has two paths:

A student enrolled in a STEM program leading to an undergraduate degree who has completed 60 credit hours of their program and requires at least 120 semester (or 180 quarter) credit hours to graduate.
A student who has earned a STEM undergraduate degree and has enrolled in a teaching certification program.

Wells Fargo has specific scholarships and grants for veterans. The Wells Fargo Veterans Scholarship Program provides scholarships to fill unmet financial need of veterans after military benefits and other grants and scholarships have been packaged by their school. This financial support will allow veterans to focus on completing their education and reduce reliance on student loans.

The Wells Fargo Veterans Emergency Grant Program provides emergency financial grants to veterans already enrolled in postsecondary education who might otherwise be forced to drop out of college because of unforeseen financial emergencies. These grants will help veterans meet their household expenses and ensure they are able to stay in school without creating undue financial hardship for themselves or their families.
