The National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) offers up to three years of support for graduate study in a range of STEM and social-scientific fields. Awards differ in duration for research Master’s Degrees and PhDs. The GRFP may be applied for during the same year you are applying for a graduate program (senior year of college or after you’ve graduated) or in the first year you are attending a graduate program. Awards are made to individuals but payment is made to the university where the awardee attends a graduate program.

Application and recommendation deadlines generally fall in October.

The Office of Student Fellowships provides limited support for NSF GRFP applicants, and Director of Student Fellowships Marynel Ryan Van Zee has a set of materials to assist with preparing the different components of the application. You may contact Marynel for further information.

Applicants are encouraged to seek guidance for this award as early as possible from faculty and research mentors because the application requires substantial lead time to prepare and at least two recommendations must be submitted before an applicant may submit their application materials.
