Chevening Scholarships allow bachelor’s degree holders from a wide range of (non-US) citizenships to attend a one-year Master’s degree program in the UK. Chevening eligibility varies by country, but a few requirements apply for all potential applicants. To be eligible for a Chevening Scholarship you must meet the criteria posted on the scholarship website (excerpted below):

  • Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country or territory.
  • Return to your country of citizenship for a minimum of two years after your award has ended.
  • Have completed all components of an undergraduate degree that will enable you to gain entry onto a postgraduate programme at a UK university by the time you submit your application. This is typically equivalent to an upper second-class 2:1 honours degree in the UK but may be different depending on your course and university choice.
  • Have at least two years (equivalent to 2,800 hours) of work experience.
  • Apply to three different eligible UK university courses and have received an unconditional offer from one of these choices by the deadline listed on the application timeline.

Other important criteria relate to dual citizenship, refugee status, and other matters – consult the Chevening pages for detailed information.

Application Process

There is no Carleton endorsement or college process for application to the Chevening Scholarship, but you may receive guidance and feedback on your materials from the Director of Student Fellowships. Applications open early in the academic year and close in November; see the timeline for further detail. Following a first review, those identified as potential candidates for the award are invited to submit references and other materials in advance of the final review and selection process (which is linked to the application timeline for most Master’s degree programs in the UK).
