Joyce Hughes

Joyce A. Hughes ’61 passed away November 13th, 2025. Hughes served as a trustee of Carleton College from 1969 to 1994. In 2001, she was elected Trustee Emerita and was awarded by the college an Honorary Doctor of Laws for her body of work.

Hughes served on the faculty of Northwestern Law School, teaching and mentoring students for over 40 years. She received numerous honors and public service awards from the American, National, and Cook County Bar Associations; American Constitution Society; and other professional affiliations and civic organizations. Devoted to family, faith, and the daily reading of the New York Times, her sudden humor, probing conversations, stubborn resolve, selfless pragmatism and unconditional love are already missed. Thirty years ago, which was then 34 years since her Carleton graduation, Joyce Hughes graciously invited this Carleton archivist in town for a conference into her Chicago home to record an oral history interview primarily about her Carleton-related experiences as student and trustee. Her story in both roles - and others, of course - was an impressive one, and I've stayed an admirer ever since.

When as a freshman exploring the hallways of Nourse dormitory where I lived, on the top floor, I saw an open door with light pouring out from a small single room lined with colorful books and with a slanted ceiling. Smiling and and gracious, Joyce Hughes invited me in for a pleasant little chat. I remember feeling impressed at how she was sturdily making her way in a largely white college. Years later, I'd sometimes read her name in the Chicago Tribune regarding further achievements.
