Virginia Stansell
1 March 2021Alice Virginia (“Ginny”) Stansell, age 81, died on February 9 after a battle with cancer. Ginny was an instructor in harpsichord at Carleton from 1983 to 1994. She was also a member of Carleton’s Pro Musica group, singing and playing viola da gamba. In the 1970s and 80s, Ginny hosted high school students and served as president of Northfield’s “ABC Program” (A Better Chance) for inner city youth, sponsored by Carleton.

Nancy Wilkie
19 January 2021Nancy Wilkie, age 78, died at home in Northfield on January 18th after a long battle with cancer. Nancy taught at Carleton for 39 years, beginning as an adjunct instructor in Classics in 1974, adding Sociology/Anthropology as one of her home departments, creating and directing the Archaeology program at Carleton, becoming an “honorary member” of the Geology department, and retiring as the William H. Laird Professor of Classics, Anthropology, and the Liberal Arts, Emerita.

Sy Schuster
2 November 2020Seymour (Sy) Schuster, age 94, died on October 31st. He had tested positive for COVID-19 on October 28. Sy taught Mathematics at Carleton, beginning as a visiting associate professor in 1958, and retiring as the Laird Professor of Mathematics and the Liberal Arts, Emeritus, in 1994.

Maria Lugones
16 July 2020Maria Lugones, age 76, died on July 14th. Maria taught Philosophy at Carleton, beginning in 1972 as an instructor and leaving in 1994 as a full professor. She went on to teach at Binghamton University in New York. She returned in 2005–2006 as the Cowling Visiting Professor of Philosophy

Jean Osman
12 June 2020Jean Osman, age 90, died on May 17th in Rochester, MN. Jean was an instructor in Education at Carleton from 1975–1986. She returned as a tutor and tester in the Learning Center from 2000–2002.

Mylla Urban
31 March 2020Mylla Urban, age 78, died on March 29th after a long illness. Mylla came to Carleton in 1969, coaching field hockey, swimming, and softball. Her gifts for connecting with people and managing programs became quickly known and she took on a wide range of roles in her 30 years at Carleton.

William Woehrlin
10 January 2020William Woehrlin, age 91, died on January 9th in Northfield. Bill taught History at Carleton for 31 years, beginning as an Assistant Professor of History in 1962 and retiring as the Laird Bell Professor of History, Emeritus, in 1993. Bill was a deeply respected, popular, and caring teacher and colleague. He was a “gracious intellectual,” an eloquent, clear, and careful scholar, teaching courses in Russian, Soviet, and Modern European intellectual and economic history.

Mary Horozaniecki
28 October 2019Mary Horozaniecki, age 68, died on Oct 23rd after a long battle with cancer. Mary taught violin at Carleton for 24 years, beginning as an adjunct instructor in 1993 and retiring as Senior Lecturer in Violin and Viola in 2017. “Mrs. H,” as she was known to her students, was a cheerful, supportive, and effective teacher and a gracious and generous colleague.

John Tymoczko
27 May 2019John Tymoczko, age 70, died May 26th of a heart attack. John taught Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Carleton for 39 years, beginning in 1976 as an Assistant Professor of Biology and retiring in 2015 as the Towsley Professor of Biology, Emeritus.

Andrea Kodner-Wenzel
22 March 2019Andrea Lucia Kodner-Wenzel, age 59, died on March 14th. Andrea was an adjunct instructor in flute at Carleton from 1991 to 2001. She combined her interests and skills in music with work in information technology.
