Remembering Carolyn Soule

13 January 2021

It is with the greatest sadness that we announce the passing of alumna, sometime Carleton Miscellany editorial assistant, long-time departmental administrative assistant, and colleague, friend, and mentor to generations of English students and faculty, Carolyn (Richards) Soule ’58.

Carolyn’s love for her college, her department, and her discipline ran long and deep. She supported the department wisely and with good humor for many years. Her relish for departmental lore and legend–the more scurrilous the better–enlivened many a picnic, sherry hour, and banquet. And the generous welcome she extended to newcomers–along with the always-full jar of candies on her desk–will be warmly recalled by generations of students.

The department invites alumni who interacted with Carolyn during and beyond their time at Carleton to participate in a longer tribute that will be published on the Second Laird Miscellany. Please send your reminiscences of her to aestill@carleton.edu.

As we hope to include contributions from a large number of alumni, we ask that you restrict yourself to 300 words and share longer memories on the department’s Facebook page. We would also love to see photographs you have with Carolyn through the years.

We will be sharing more in the coming days. For now, though, we bid farewell to our dear friend and extend our condolences to her daughter Kate and [her] family.
