Salman Rushdie at Carleton in October

16 September 2013

Renowned writer Salman Rushdie will visit Carleton from Oct 25-26. His visit is part of a year-long series of events on the subject of censorship, the impetus for which is the 25th anniversary this year of the publication of his masterpiece, The Satanic Verses.

Mr. Rushdie’s visit will include the following events:

1. Friday, October 25, 6 pm (Rec Center): “The Satanic Verses and Censorship: 25 Year Later” (Lecture followed by brief Q&A)

2. Saturday, October 26, 9 am (Weitz Cinema): “Salman Rushdie in Conversation” (A discussion moderated by Arnab Chakladar)

Both events are free and open to all. However, both events will be ticketed–information on ticketing to follow.

The second event will kick off a day-long sympsoium at the Weitz on censorship, blasphemy and free-speech, featuring presentations by Carleton faculty from a range of disciplines. The symposium is open to all.

Any chance these events will be recorded for the public? Maybe a webcast?

Alas, no. We are only allowed to record them for archival purposes.

Well, it was your idea to graduate and leave for the east coast.

I second Mara's outrage! Sounds like censorship to me... Perhaps you could sneak in a stenographer?

I assume Shavera will be live-tweeting the whole thing.

I was planning to! Never fear alumni-who-cannot-attend, I will provide a play by play of the whole event. I am sort of hoping I can convince him to retweet what I say with snarky comments.
