Junior Spotlight: Shane McSparron

This week in the Junior Spotlight: Shane McSparron.

shaneWhat is one thing your fellow English majors don’t know about you?

Something my fellow English majors don’t know about me is that I am obsessed with cats. I turn into a five-year-old every time I get to pet one.

Why are you an English major? Why not History, SoAn, CAMS, etc.?

I chose to major in English because it has been my favorite topic to study since elementary school. The materials that we study in English classes are very interesting, and I have learned a lot from them. It also helps that the professors we have in the English Department are very good at what they do and make class enjoyable for everyone.

What is one book you’d be fine never reading again?

One book I would be fine never reading again is Pamela, or Virtue Rewarded by Samuel Richardson (no offense to Jessica Leiman or English 217!). I found myself getting very frustrated with the characters, especially Pamela, for being so overdramatic and clueless.

You’re stranded on a desert island and can only bring three books. Which books would you bring?

I would bring The Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the Ring By J.R.R. Tolkien because, who doesn’t love Lord of the Rings? The second book I would bring is Hoopster by Alan Lawrence Sitomer because I can relate to the main character, who loves to write and play basketball, as well as the book’s amazing plot. The third book I would bring is Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. Of all the books I have read for English classes, this has been my favorite. I could read it over and over, discovering something new each time.
