andry1The Miscellany introduces a new feature this term – fashion profiles! We’ve asked our most trendy majors about their fashion choices and we’ve found that the inhabitants of Laird boast varied and eclectic styles. This should of course come as a surprise to no one – historically, students of English literature are known to be responsible for groundbreaking fashion trends.

Here at the Miscellany, we promise that we take our fashion extremely seriously and entirely unironically. Have an English major friend you’d like to recommend for a profile? Is there someone in your Shakespeare class you’ve always admired for their dress sense? Want to profile yourself because your skirt-over-jeans ensemble has gotten you rave reviews your entire life? Don’t fear, you can be part of this fashion revolution (?) too. Simply send recommendations to and we’ll do the rest.

First up, Andry DeJong (’15)

1. What are you wearing right now?

A. I’m wearing a dress that I bought in Paris, earrings that have silver feet on them given to me by my aunt, and a light coat from a thrift store in Minneapolis.

2. How would you describe your style?

A. Chic, comfortable, and convenient? Truthfully it depends on the day. I like to mix clothing from different cultures, and also wear odd things from thrift stores. Sometimes I like to look urban and wear leather boots, leather jackets, and scarves. Other times I want to feel like I’m in the 90’s with hand-knit sweaters and high-waist jeans. I mostly wear earthy or primary colors, and I prefer natural fabrics like cotton, linen, and silks. I like lacy things. I don’t wear necklaces except for a pendant on a black string that my brother gave me. I love earrings. But at the end of the day, whatever I wear needs to be color-coordinated.

andry23. What’s your favorite piece of clothing and why?

A. My favorite piece of clothing is a t-shirt that I’ve had since I was 6, and yes, it still fits me. There are sifaka lemurs on the back, the cotton is so worn, that it’s almost as smooth as silk, it’s stained pink from Holi, and I cut it into a cute crop top.

4. What’s your favorite fashion decade?

A. The early 90’s because of high-waist jeans and sweaters. Sort of baggy but well-fitting? And the hair.

5. If you could adopt any literary character’s style, who would it be and why?

A. Iris Chase from The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood.

6. What inspires your style?

A. My South African piano teacher in high school. The different countries I’ve been to. And other people with interesting style.
