Our creative spotlight of the week is Annemarie Eayrs, who is currently a senior English major. In her evocative poetry, she seeks out connections in unexpected places, from the post-apocalyptic nature of “forest lullaby” to the seemingly mundane supermarket in “white cheddar.” Thanks to Annemarie for sharing her work with us!
forest lullaby
narrow trails
leaf-hushed
and dim
fingers
brush past
alight on gusts
of whispers
a stale wind
reminiscing
worms erode
the hands of
clocks
let hours digest
the brittle teeth
of concrete stumps
metal trunks still
protruding
wire roots
grappling
for electrified
earth
telephone poles
rot slowly the
hard dirt takes them
in the end
even bridges fall
asleep
into their rivers
—————————————————————-
white cheddar
the plastic bag
nicks my wrist with powdered cheese
already festering and yellow
with salt
I find myself
on the nutrition table
between percent and value
after natural skin the color
of burnt rice
and the oriental flavor
packets in twelve cent ramen
but not in the rice cake itself
white as god’s face
or the tender inside of a
crab rangoon
