On the evening of April 19th, members of the Carleton and Northfield communities were treated to a screening of the National Theatre’s production of Shakespeare’s comedy, As You Like It. The Miscellany took to the streets to get a sense of the student reception of the performance. We asked the age-old question: would you “like” it or nah?

Overall, it was an interesting take on the play, and the actress playing Celia made me look at the character in a way I’d never thought of before. It’s always exciting to me when a production makes me look at something in Shakespeare in a new way.

I didn’t quite fall in love with Rosalind the way I wanted to.

They left out my favorite lines! Like the most English major-y jokes in the entire play.

I wish the actor playing Celia had been cast as Rosalind. She was likeable, charming, and totally stole the show. I also think they seriously misinterpreted Duke Senior – he’s an old, jolly, nature-loving dude, not a short-fused tyrant.

There were really strong performances from the minor characters.

I wish they relied less on spectacle and focused more on Shakespeare’s words. He knew what he was doing.

I really liked the production at first, but can someone explain the colorful, futuristic, space-ship office space to me?
(In follow-up questioning, Erik added that the actor playing Jaques deserved a definite thumbs-up.)

It was so cute. The sheep and Celia balanced out the things that I didn’t like about the actor playing Rosalind.
