- Remember that the application process for graduate schools is not the same as applying to undergraduate schools. There is no common application and each university and program is very different. It is important to research the schools as well as the programs thoroughly before applying.
- Email graduate students. Every university will have a list of their current graduate students and most will also include what area their research is in as well. Graduate students can provide useful information on faculty members, library resources and other features of the Masters and PhD. programs, particularly in your field of interest.
- Research faculty members and their areas of specialty. If there is no faculty member who can guide and advise you on your research, then there is no point applying to that school.
- Once you find faculty members whose research interests you, it will not hurt to make contact with them as well. Even if they do not respond it is a good opportunity to introduce yourself and express interest in their research and the university.
