Washington University’s (WU) 3-2 and 3-3 Dual Degree Program allows Carleton students to spend 3 years at Carleton (the first number) and then either 2 years at WU to earn a BS in engineering or 3 years at WU to earn both a BS and MS in engineering (the second number). You are automatically admitted to both program and you choose which program to pursue when you are accepted to the program. There is no application fee.

Here is the application process:

  • Sign-up for the Carleton Engineering Email List when you realize you are interested in engineering. You can do this by emailing the engineering advisors or the physics department administrative assistant and requesting to be added to the list. This will help you stay informed about engineering-related activities that might be of interest to you: talks, summer opportunities, WU informational events, etc.
  • Make an appointment to talk to one of the engineering advisors as soon as you realize you are interested in pursuing this program. Sending a quick email expressing your interest to one of the engineering advisors or to engineering@carleton.edu are the best ways to do this. We will get back to you with the best way to make an appointment with us.
  • Declare intent to apply to the Dual Degree program by completing and submitting the Dual Degree Program Registration Form by Week 3 – Spring Term of your Sophomore Year. Ideally, you would complete the form by April 1st.
  • Provide proof of meeting program requirements by completing and submitting the Request for Liaison Recommendation Form by February 1st of your Junior Year.
  • Complete the WU Dual Degree Program application by filling out the online application on the WU Dual Degree Application website. The deadline to apply is typically the end of February.
  • Wait for your admissions decision. You should expect a letter to arrive via email around mid-March. If you are admitted, the letter will also include financial aid information, enrollment information, and a decision deadline.
  • Make your choice and share it! You can choose to either accept or decline your admission to WU. Whichever choice you make, in addition to letting WU know you must also contact the registrar (registrar@carleton.edu) and the Dual Degree Program Liaison (engineering@carleton.edu). You can do this in the same email. If you are accepted to the program, you should include your acceptance letter in your correspondence with the registrar and the Dual Degree Program Liaison.
