In this interactive Tatreez workshop, participants are introduced to the rich tradition of Palestinian embroidery through a short slideshow presentation. The presentation explores different Tatreez motifs, explaining their meanings, historical origins, and the cultural significance they hold for Palestinian women and their communities. Participants learn how these patterns tell stories of identity, region, and heritage.
After the presentation, each participant receives a beginner kit that includes a needle, Aida cloth, embroidery floss, and a selection of traditional motif patterns. With step-by-step guidance, participants practice cross-stitching and begin creating their own Tatreez piece while learning the basic techniques of this historic art form. The workshop offers a meaningful, hands-on way to connect with Palestinian culture and preserve this beautiful tradition.
Wafa Ayyad is a Palestinian Tatreez artist, educator, and cultural presenter. She learned the art of traditional Palestinian embroidery from her grandmother, continuing a practice that has been lovingly passed down through generations of women. Deeply committed to preserving this cultural heritage, Wafa has spent years teaching and presenting about Tatreez, sharing the history, symbolism, and stories behind its motifs with diverse audiences.
In addition to her work as a Tatreez instructor, Wafa is a middle school teacher, as well as a mother and grandmother. Through both her classroom and her workshops, she is passionate about connecting people to culture, history, and the beauty of handmade traditions.
