Over and Over

Thu, April 2, 2026 - Fri, April 17, 2026 • Boliou Gallery
Oil painting with rough gestures of people gathered around an obscured representation of a First Aid dummy

Soren paints the body as a site of uncertainty. Rhyming gestures connect one painting to the next, linking scenes of impersonators, decoys, and emergency response training, through the play of mimesis and repetition. A practiced hand placement for a future life saved, or a performance perfected to conjure a long-gone star. Figures pretend with costumes and props, with stakes both dire and frivolous. Swapping, probing, and the fallibility of embodiment plays out between the figures and within the surface of the paint. Repetition here works twofold: a doubling down and an invitation to doubt.

Soren Hope (b. Long Island, NY) is an artist and teacher based between New York, New Haven, and, for lucky interludes, Northfield. Hope received a BA in Studio Art from Carleton College in 2015 and an MFA in Painting from Yale University in 2023. They exhibited solo shows at New York Life Gallery (2025) and Duck Creek (2018), and group exhibitions include Perrotin, YveYang, Spurs, Harpers, Eric Firestone Gallery, and Francois Ghebaly. Soren has attended residencies at Vermont Studio Center, Low Season Artist Projects, and 100 West Corsicana.
