Join the GSC and the Library at the Queer Zinefest! You will have the opportunity to make a page of a zine that will be put together at this event, as well as view Historic Queer Zines from different parts of the US. We will have Boba from Tin Tea!!
Zine making is zero pressure – come hang, unplug and get a little messy as we tell our stories through glue, paper and ink. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or have never picked up a long-reach stapler, we’re here to guide you through the zine-making process. Join us in our creative journey to build a queer narrative that actually looks like us!
Special Collections and Archives will feature historic zines from our collections for this event.
The College Archives will showcase a selection of student-created zines and newsletters, including the earliest known materials documenting out queer identity at Carleton. These items show a continuity of student experiences at Carleton from the 1970s to today.
From Special Collections, we will have zines from two major collections:
Latinos in the US Zine Collection
For Caribbean and Latinx communities in the US, zines have been vital. These small booklets represent avenues for education and advocacy, allowing them to push back against discrimination and xenophobia in difficult political and economic climates, as well as the media.
Zines in this collection explore topics like assimilation, racism, immigration, capitalism, democracy, colonialism and decolonization, social justice, human rights, mental health, cultural identity, gender identity and art. This collection features zines obtained at zine shows throughout Southern California over the past year.
Craig Baldwin Zine Collection
An incredible collection of 219, rare, and just plain hardcore, punk, weird, and way underground zines collected by the beloved and acclaimed San Francisco filmmaker and curator Craig Baldwin, known internationally as the proprietor of Other Cinema, the world’s longest-running micro-cinema. From 1977 to 2023. The majority of the publications are from the 1980s and 90s. This is an amazing snapshot of both the raw punk era and the various post-punk movements (queercore, riot grrrl, crusty-punk) that era spawned.
