Our Presence on Dakota Land: Beyond Acknowledgement
Our Presence on Dakota Land: Beyond Acknowledgement
The region in which Carleton is located has been regarded by Dakota as homelands for time immemorial. Join Indigenous Communities Liaison, Marcy Averill, to explore how we can move beyond acknowledgement of our position within these lands into allyship and partnership. In this workshop, we will challenge ourselves to consider ethical and reciprocal engagement practices and partnerships as defined by Dakota leaders. Historical context will be examined, mapped to current challenges, and connected to expanding initiatives in Indigenous Engagement at Carleton.
This offering is part of our community education. Please register on Workday.
Bio
Marcy Averill was hired in August 2020 as Carleton’s inaugural Indigenous Communities Liaison, a position designed to strengthen the College’s ability to enact its land acknowledgement commitments, partner with tribal governments and Native organizations, and promote the well-being of Native members of the campus community. Such efforts will include, among others, building better relations with Native nations and improving how Carleton engages Native people and Native-related issues on campus.
