music&AI: Concert and Panel Discussion

Thu, February 20, 2025 • 3:30pm - 5:00pm (1h 30m) • Kracum Performance Hall

This event introduces a newly fine-tuned AI music model for Arab oud improvisation, trained this term by Carleton students John Hurtubise and Henry Burkhardt under faculty and specialist supervision. The program begins with a solo oud performance by featured artist Omar Abbad, followed by machine-generated music improvisations modeled after his style.

A panel discussion will follow, featuring Professors Jeff Ondich and Anna Rafferty (Computer Science), Dr. Melissa J. Scott (Music), and AI music engineer Fadi Al-Ghawanmeh (University of Jordan), along with the artist and student research assistants. The event offers an opportunity to explore the intersection of music and AI-driven creativity.

Biographies of the participants in this event can be found here.

This research-based event is sponsored by the Alan '67 and Kathy Muirhead Fund for Arts and Sciences Collaboration, with additional support from the Department of Music.
