PHYS 123: What Physicists Do (week 5)
The Department of Physics and Astronomy is pleased to announce this year’s Physics 123 Line-up. “What Physicists Do” is our annual series of five lectures by invited speakers, many of whom are Carleton Physics alumni. It is intended to introduce students to a broad range of real-world physics and to give some perspective on the kinds of work done by people with a physics background. The talks are open to all.
The presentations are in Olin 141 on Fridays during 6th period (3:30-4:30pm). Speakers will be available for informal discussions over refreshments afterward. Questions: Marty Baylor, Olin 231, mbaylor@carleton.edu
May 9th Caprice Phillips: “From Rural Skies to Black In Astro – A Journey in Astronomy”
Curiosity, determination, and a commitment to fostering inclusivity in the field are my own personal pillars in my career and goals in astronomy. In this talk, I will discuss a threefold journey in my astronomy career. First, I will discuss what led to a pursuit of a career in astronomy from what started as car rides in rural Arkansas. Then, I will talk about my journey and career path in astronomy and the current area of research I engage with. I will finish with introducing and discussing a grassroots initiative and organization, Black In Astro, in which I am a founding member and current vice-president.
