PHYS 123: What Physicists Do (week 1)
The Department of Physics and Astronomy is pleased to announce this year’s Physics 123 Line-up. “What Physicists Do” is our annual series of five lectures by invited speakers, many of whom are Carleton Physics alumni. It is intended to introduce students to a broad range of real-world physics and to give some perspective on the kinds of work done by people with a physics background. The talks are open to all.
The presentations are in Olin 141 on Fridays during 6th period (3:30-4:30pm). Speakers will be available for informal discussions over refreshments afterward. Questions: Marty Baylor, Olin 231, mbaylor@carleton.edu
April 11th Min Yao Lim ‘12: “Constantly In Motion: Newton's Laws (Loosely) Applied To My Life”
What do Physicists do? In particular, what did this international student from Malaysia with a Bachelor of Arts in a hard science from a small liberal arts college wind up doing? Join me as I share my journey from my Carleton years to the present day; working in Consumer Electronics Engineering and then transitioning to the Blogosphere. Guided by Newton the wise, I'll discuss the forces that shaped my career, the inertia that kept me going (or stalled), and the equal and opposite reactions that directed my decisions. We will see how my Physics and Carleton education taught me to understand, appreciate, and contribute to the world from a unique perspective.
