Attend this lecture from acclaimed guest speaker Susan Byrne, Professor of Hispanic Studies at University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

The fundamental ideas that informed Alexander Baumgarten’s 18th c. coinage of the word aesthetics and Immanuel Kant’s subsequent proposed mechanisms for its study as philosophical practice include many that underwent drastic revision in 16th c. Spain. While developments in Italian Renaissance art and mathematics are recognized as contributing factors to what Cassirer called the eventual “autonomy of aesthetics,” there is yet another key constituent element that has gone unnoticed. This talk will seek to fill in that missing link.

This lecture is sponsored by the Hugh Galusha Lectureship and the Spanish Department.
