Lights, Camera, Language: The Role of Media in Second Language Speech Learning
Wed, October 23, 2024

Have you ever heard a friend or loved one say, 'I learned English by watching Friends'? While this might seem like a casual remark, it raises an intriguing question: what is the true impact of media on second language acquisition? In this talk, we’ll explore how various forms of media—from film and television to social media and podcasts—influence the way we produce and perceive speech in a new language. I’ll share insights from my own research on the role of foreign film in speech learning, while also discussing the broader effects of media on language acquisition, illustrating what so many people actually 'learn by watching.'"
Please join us for snacks before the event at 4pm in the Linguistics Lounge on 4th Willis!
