Roger Jackson Publishes Article and Interviewed
23 August 2021Roger Jackson, John W. Nason Professor of Asian Studies and Religion, Emeritus, recently published an article entitled “Avoiding Rebirth: Buddhist Modernist Views on Past and Future Lives,” in Secularizing Buddhism: New Perspectives on a Dynamic Tradition, edited by Richard Payne (Boulder: Shambhala, 2021). In conjunction with the book’s release, he was interviewed by philosopher and Buddhism scholar Jay Garfield on a live Zoom cast sponsored by Tricycle magazine and Shambhala Publications.

Roger Jackson Book in Second Printing
6 August 2021Roger Jackson, John W. Nason Professor of Asian Studies and Religion, Emeritus, book Mind Seeing Mind: Mahāmudrā and the Geluk Tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, which was originally published in 2019 by Wisdom Publications (Boston) has issued a second printing, with corrections and minor revisions.

Carol Rutz Presents at the International Writing Across the Curriculum Conference
6 August 2021Carol Ruth, Senior Lecturer in English, Emerita, with co-presenter Chris Thaiss, Professor Emeritus, University of California Davis, presented a plenary talk, “WAC Fearlessness, Sustainability, and Adaptability over Five Decades” at the 15th International Writing Across the Curriculum Conference, held virtually and hosted by Colorado State University, August 2 through 6. Thaiss and Rutz were also among 28 senior WAC scholars named Distinguished Fellows of the Association for Writing Across the Curriculum.

Alison Kettering Lectures and Article
15 June 2021Alison Kettering, William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Art History, Emerita, gave three zoom lectures this spring: “The Artists’ Book and Fred Hagstrom’s Work at BIMA,” at the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, on May 21; “Women and Watercolor in the 17th-century Dutch Republic,” at the University of Amsterdam, on April 13; and “Black in Rembrandt’s Time, the Culture of Race in 17th-century Dutch Art,” at the University of Arkansas, on March 12. This summer, an article, “Watercolor and Women in the Early Modern Netherlands, Between Mirror and Comb,” will appear in Woman’s Art Journal 42:1 (Spring-Summer 2021).

Roger Paas Publishes Chapter
15 June 2021Roger Paas, William H. Laird Professor of German and the Liberal Arts, Emeritus, has published a chapter in A History of American History and Culture of the First World War, ed. Tim Dayton and Mark Van Wienen (Cambridge University Press, 2020), pp. 76-93. The chapter is entitled “Popular Music: Tin Pan Alley as National Barometer” and draws heavily on the material he published earlier in his anthology America Sings of War: American Sheet Music from World War I (Wiesbaden: Harrassowitz, 2014).

Norman Vig Publishes New Edition of Textbook
11 June 2021Norman Vig, Winifred and Atherton Bean Professor of Science, Technology, and Society, Emeritus, published a new (11th!) edition of his college textbook, “Environmental Policy: New Directions for the Twenty-First Century” in January. After more than 30 years, Norm is stepping down as lead editor with this edition, but he continues to follow climate change news on a daily basis. He is enjoying gardening and photography at his home in Roseville, CA. -
Carol Rutz
11 June 2021Carol Rutz, Senior Lecturer in English, Emerita, as of 2019 has succeeded Rich Noer as Executive Director of the Cannon Valley Elder Collegium (CVEC), a nonprofit that provides liberal arts courses to senior citizens. Thanks to the pandemic the CVEC’s reach has extended nationally and internationally with remote offerings. Future terms will offer a mix of in-person and remote courses.

Also interviewed for the podcast was Yangsi Rinpoche, the founder and president of Maitripa.
