  • Louis Newman Gives Invited Talks

    Louis Newman, John M. and Elizabeth W. Musser Professor of Religious Studies, Emeritus, was invited to speak on “Critical Thinking: What You Really Came to College to Learn” to students at the University of Virginia and Georgetown University. He also spoke at both schools about his recent book, “Thinking Critically in College: The Essential Handbook for Student Success.” While in DC, he gave a book talk to alumni sponsored by the Carleton club there.

  • Alison Kettering Publishes Article

    Alison Kettering, William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Art History, Emerita, has published “Hendrick Goltzius: Painting with Colored Chalk,” in the Journal of Historians of Netherlandish Art. Kettering argues that Goltzius’s brilliant colored-chalk portrait drawings of artist friends from the 1590s give insight into his transition from engraving to full-fledged oil painting in 1600.

    Joel Weisberg, emeritus professor of physics and astronomy, Alice Curtin ’19, and researchers at the University of Vermont and Arecibo Observatory recently published “Polarization measurements of Arecibo-sky pulsars: Faraday rotations and emission-beam analyses” in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, Vol. 524, pp. 5042-5049.

  • Becky Boling Publishes Poem

    Becky Boling, Stephen R. Lewis, Jr. Professor of Spanish and the Liberal Arts, Emerita, published a poem, “Shush,” which will be posted along the Wood Lake Nature Center’s poetry walking trail in Richfield, Minn. A gala opening for the trail’s newly chosen poems is on August 19, 2023 at 6 p.m., and Boling’s poem will remain on the trail until August 2025. Boling also published an ekphrastic piece, “Have You Seen?”, in Visual Verse: An Anthology of Art and Words.

  • Roger Jackson Presents at Conference

    Roger Jackson, John W. Nason Professor of Asian Studies and Religion, Emeritus, recently presented a paper titled “Great-Seal Text, or Not? Saraha’s Vajra Secret Song,” at a conference honoring the career and contributions of Professor José Cabezón. Cabezón taught at Carleton in 1985–86, and is retiring as the Dalai Lama professor of Tibetan studies at the University of California–Santa Barbara.

  • Roger Jackson Teaches at Maitripa College

    Roger Jackson, John W. Nason Professor of Asian Studies and Religion, Emeritus, recently completed a six-week teaching stint at Maitripa College in Portland, OR. While there, he taught two courses on Buddhist texts and gave a public lecture titled “The Mahāsiddha Connection: Saraha, Maitripa, and the Rebirth of Tibetan Buddhism.” Additionally, his most recent book, “Rebirth: A Guide to Mind, Karma, and Cosmos in the Buddhist World” (Shambhala, 2022) is now available as an audio book on Audiobooks or Audible.
