Networks and Social Capital in Determining Patterns of Inequality and Immobility by Dr. Matthew O. Jackson

How do people’s social networks affect their economic trajectories, and what do we know about how those networks form? How can we overcome the divides in networks that lead to inequality and immobility?  What are the potential benefits and dangers of social engineering?  Dr. Jackson will show data and theories that help answer these questions.

Dr. Jackson is the William D. Eberle Professor of Economics at Stanford University.  His research concerns game theory, microeconomic theory, and the study of social and economic networks.

Refreshments served.

The Economics Department's annual Veblen-Clark Lectureship brings an outstanding scholar in economics to Carleton each year for a public lecture and meetings with students and faculty. The lectureship presumes no ideological bias, but celebrates the variety of viewpoints and paradigms demonstrated by Veblen and Clark that have historically enriched the study of economics at Carleton.
