The Office of the Provost has modest funds with which to support student research-related expenses. These Academic Grants are typically limited to a maximum of $500 per current Carleton-enrolled student, once per academic year.  Students are expected to pursue additional sources of funding (i.e., their department, the host institution, CSA, etc. Additionally, the Career Center has a Pilot program to support students (up to $400) in conference participation if other sources will not provide funding)

Funding may include:

  • Travel to a conference that a current student has been invited to present their academic research at;
  • Publication, communication and project expenses (excluding equipment);
  • Travel to sites where research is being conducted; and
  • Travel for research connected to the Senior Comprehensive Exercise (“Comps”)

Notes:

  • The project or conference attendance must be connected to the student’s academic work at Carleton.
  • Only one grant per Carleton-enrolled student per academic year will be considered. Application should be for one project or conference, only.
  • Travel costs may include airfare*, lodging, conference registration fees, ground transportation, and modest meals**.
    • *Airfare: Coach class only, booked as far in advance as possible to lower rate. Add-ons that increase the cost are considered a personal expense.
    • **Meals that are included with conference registration should be eaten at the conference venue and not requested for additional reimbursement. Eligible meals should be nutritious (i.e. not candy, dessert, etc.) and cost about $8-$20 per meal, depending on the meal and location. Meal receipts must be itemized, and show the last 4 digits of the credit card used for payment.
  • Students who receive need-based financial aid during the academic year may be eligible for additional funding–reviewed on a case-by-case basis.  
  • Requests will be reviewed weekly during the term.
  • Faculty members attending a conference along with more than two students presenting research should contact Karen Moldenhauer in the Office of the Provost.

Thanks to the generosity of family and friends of Toni Sostek, a beloved teacher who passed away in January, 1996, after a distinguished career in dance and choreography, The Carleton Tiny Toni has been established.

The Tiny Toni is a small grant designed for students who want to use art to enrich their own and others’ lives. Grants of up to $200.00 will support projects in any of the arts: English, theatre, dance, music, media studies and art. The grants may be used for a wide range of activities, and are awarded on a first-come first-served basis.

Interested students may apply by submitting the following to Karen Moldenhauer, Office of the Provost, via email.

  • A proposal of not more than 250 words;
  • A budget; and
  • A faculty letter of support to endorse your proposal and your ability to carry out the project, if applicable, submitted by said faculty member directly to Karen.
