Advisers may wish to meet with their advisees over lunch. The research shows that early contact with advisees during a term minimizes errors and poor choices that become more time-consuming problems to solve later in the term when time is especially short. Finding time early in the term and in a relaxed and informal setting aids advisees.

The “Take a Faculty Member to Lunch” program encourages student interaction with faculty outside of the classroom. Each faculty member is given a meal plan that allows for three lunches per term with students. The intent of this program is to give students the opportunity to invite a faculty member to lunch as a way of expanding the mentoring and learning relationship. This lunch privilege is redeemable at both Carleton dining halls during common time, Monday–Friday, during the same period that student meal plans are active. Staff members who serve as academic advisers are also eligible for this program.

How do you take advantage of this privilege? Inform the dining hall cashier that you want to use one of your “Take A Faculty Member To Lunch” meals before you present your OneCard. The student joining you is expected to pay for their own lunch. You can monitor your transactions on the OneCard Dashboard. For more information on this program, contact onecard@carleton.edu.
