Kim received her B.A. in Psychology and Social Studies Education as well as a Minnesota Teaching License from St. Olaf College. She holds an MAEd and graduate certificate in Urban Teaching from Hamline University. She currently serves as president of the MN TRIO Association and on the board of the Educational Opportunity Association.
