My recent research focuses on carbon dioxide removal through enhanced weathering in agricultural systems. Crushed silicate rocks and alkaline industrial materials (like steel slag) have the potential to sequester inorganic carbon through mineral weathering while also providing co-benefits to farmers through improved crop yields and soil properties. We are in the first year of a 3-year field trial testing basalt and slag soil amendments on an agricultural field on campus at Carleton. In addition to the field trial, we are also conducting greenhouse experiments to test enhanced weathering in a more controlled environment.
