Education & Professional History
University of Maryland-College Park, PhD
Andrew majored in philosophy, minored in cognitive science, and acted and directed shows for ETB and Players–all at Carleton! After he graduated, he received a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Maryland, College Park and has taught both there and at Grand Valley State University in Michigan. His main areas of research are in the philosophy of cognitive science and the mind, but he also regularly teaches about aesthetics–especially the art of theater. He’s written about the navigational capacities of ants and bees, theories of phonology in generative linguistics, and why we should think about the mind as a computer.
He’s looking forward to having some great conversations with Carleton students!
At Carleton since 2025.
