Wikipedia is one of the most frequently accessed digital resources on the internet and a key nexus for the growing research area of social computing. This critical source of information has been developed and maintained over the years by a large group of volunteers who are committed to the principles of free and open access to reliable information. In this workshop, we will explore strategies for incorporating contributions to Wikipedia in classroom pedagogy, and learn how to join people across the globe in co-creating the largest encyclopedia to have ever existed.

Narrative Mapping: Birds of a Feather

Shana Crosson, University of Minnesota (moderator)
Weitz 136

Digital narrative maps are a convenient method of communicating spatial information to a wider audience. In this informal, “birds of a feather” session, we’ll share information on creating narrative maps, the options in ESRI’s Story Maps platform, and best practices to make usable and accessible Story Maps. Bring your questions, ideas, and examples so you can show off your past work or walk out with a narrative map you’ll be proud to show off in the future!

The Wandering House: Collecting Knowledge of Home and Immigration

Cecilia Cornejo, Carleton College
Weitz 132

The Wandering House is a multidisciplinary, community engagement project that features a fish house retrofitted as a mobile audio-recording studio. With support from partners throughout Northfield, Minnesota, the artist will invite community members to record their oral testimonies as they reflect on the significance of home and how current debates surrounding immigration affect this notion. The Wandering House will engage the community in the production of collective, mutual knowledge, while challenging the prevailing representations of rural people and immigrants alike. Come visit the Wandering House in person and learn how to bring a digital recording studio out of the academy and into the community.
