On Tuesday we had a great tour of Jewel Cave. Cam was intrigued by the
crystal lining of the cave walls. Below is the picture he took.

Our guide, Jay, took all the time we needed to answer questions.
See the stairs in the background? Jewel Cave has hundreds of steps to go up and down.

This is flowstone inside the cave.

Outside, Tim (and everyone else) tried crawling through the test hole to see if you are skinny enough
to go on the advanced spelunking tour. Tim excelled at this test. Maybe we'll come back
for the technical tour some other time.

After lunch we moved on to the sedimentary rock outcrops along Highway 16 on the outskirts
of Rapid City. The first stop was at a box fold which is famous among geologists. How did the
rocks get bent like that?

Maybe if we put our heads together we can work it out...

Or, you can get Cam to explain it!

The last stop of the day was at the Sundance Formation outcrop with the spectacular ripple marks.
That's Gwen above and Emily at right.

Amalia took high quality black-and-white photographs of the ripple marks
at right angles to each other with a vintage Nikon.

Let's see, the wavelength divided by two is something now... what was it...?
