The Duchess' House

“As she said this, she came suddenly upon an open place, with a little house in it about four feet high.”

Points of Interest

It is interesting to note here that for the first time Alice willingly changes her height, so as not to frighten the inhabitants of the house.  Katherine Blake considers this a truly “heroic considerateness of others in the face of the signal lack of anyone’s consideration for herself” (120).  We can also read this as one more attempt on Alice’s part to “fit” in with the inhabitants of Wonderland.  She has no desire to wield the power of a giant-like stature.  Rather she brings herself down to the height of those around her in order to belong.
