Fun Fact:
Newell said of Alice: "The dominant note in the character of Alice is childish purity and sweetness, a sweet, childish spirit at home in the midst of mystery!"

Peter Newell

Peter Newell (1862-1924), like John Tenniel, built a reputation as a political cartoonist. The first major illustrator after Tenniel, Newell's drawing are a real departure from the original. His soft pencil drawings feel friendlier and less edgy than Tenniels pen and ink and tend to emphasize the absurd, rather than the mystery of the book.
