Alix Freedman, one of the world’s most esteemed journalists, is global editor for ethics and standards at Reuters. Under the Thomson Reuters “Trust Principles, Reuters is pledged to preserving “independence, integrity and freedom from bias” in the news they gather and publish. Arguably, Reuters is the world’s least ideological major news organization, and Freedman is the watchdog making sure they retain that distinction. As a member of senior leadership group, she works closely with reporters and editors on major stories, final-reading many signature pieces, and holding all to the highest of journalistic standards. A long-time leader of ethics training at The Wall Street Journal, she oversaw ethics and standards of high-impact stories in the paper and on the Dow Jones newswires. Freedman has spent much of her decorated career as a reporter, with a keen focus on topics that require unusual reporting skill, courage, and dedication and that — in her hands — have produced stories of enormous resonance and enduring impact. Honored with numerous accolades, Freedman was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1996 for her extraordinary investigative reporting on the tobacco industry. The title of her presentation is “The Power of Facts in an Opinionated World.”
