SDAs for the 2025-26 Academic Year!

2 June 2025

We’re delighted that Jared Arroyo Ruiz, Rahim Hamid, and Allie Hopper will be the CS SDAs for 2025-2026! SDA (Student Departmental Advisers) are a crucial part of the department: they hold peer advising hours every term, coordinate events for the CS community, and can be a liaison between students and faculty. Each of them have shared a bit about themselves and why they’re excited to be an SDA; please join me in welcoming them!

Jared Arroyo Ruiz (he/him/his):

I’m drawn to computer science because of its emphasis on algorithmic thinking and the wide range of applications it has across other disciplines. I’m especially excited about the SDA position because I want to offer guidance to students, not just about navigating the CS major, but also about how their unique interests can intersect with computing. I believe it’s important to promote the idea that you don’t have to fit a single mold to belong in CS.

Outside of CS, I’m a member of Rika Anderson’s computational biology lab, and I also serve on the Carleton QuestBridge Board.

Fun fact: I’m allergic to strawberry Nesquik. Yes, like the milk. It’s tragic, I know.

Rahim Hamid:

Hi all, my name is Rahim Hamid from Lahore, Pakistan. I am interested in CS because of the diverse array of weird and challenging problems we get to solve and because of everything we get to build in the digital space in and out of class, from databases to websites. I am looking forward to connecting with the huge breadth of backgrounds and experiences that every student in the department brings, and learning more about the department, my peers and myself through my role as an SDA. Across campus, I’m involved with the Carleton Ballroom Dance Team, I play in two bands, and am the current director of Synchrony II, as well as a Peer Leader in the International Student Life Office. I hope to meet all of you soon, and don’t hesitate to say hi if you see me around campus!

Allie Hopper (they/she):

Hi, I’m Allie, I’m majoring in computer science because I like solving problems, writing code, and designing systems that make people’s lives easier. I’m super excited to be an SDA next year because of the opportunity to get involved in the department, interact with so many students, and help others on their path to learning what interests them most about computer science. Outside of the CS department, you might find me working at Sayles, hiking through the arb, or hanging out with a book in Goodbye Blue Monday.
