GroupLens is recruiting new Computer Science PhD students for the Fall 2024 term. These are fully funded positions in the University of Minnesota’s Computer Science & Engineering Department. Funding includes a tuition waiver, health insurance benefits, and a stipend to cover living expenses. For the 2021-2022 academic year, the department’s stipend amount was $27,040 for a full 12-month term. (As is common across most PhD programs, students are required to work as Research Assistants or Teaching Assistants to receive and maintain funding.) If interested, please submit your application by December 15th to be considered for fellowships.

Our work regularly appears at top-tier research venues spanning fields like computer science, psychology, sociology, and medicine. As a PhD student, you will learn to produce high-quality, original research by working closely with one or more of our faculty advisors, all of whom are widely recognized as top scholars in HCI and their respective subfields. Our alumni go on to be successful researchers at top academic institutions, industry firms, non-profit research labs, and government agencies.

- Harman Kaur is seeking candidates with interest and experience in human-centered artificial intelligence, explainability and interpretability, and hybrid intelligence systems.
- Stevie Chancellor and Lana Yarosh are seeking candidates (to be co-advised) with interest and experience in computational, machine learning, or digital methods to support recovery from substance use disorders.
- Joe Konstan is seeking candidates with interest and experience in HCI, recommender systems, or an area relevant to recommender systems (e.g., artificial intelligence, machine learning, natural language processing, or information retrieval).
