Develop Virtual Reality Experiences

26 April 2023

Are you interested in a paid opportunity to help develop Virtual Reality experiences about Viking Longships and how they were built, sailed and used in death rituals?

Austin Mason, Dir., Digital Arts & Humanities at Carleton is pleased to announce the opportunity to join a research team for The Virtual Viking Longship Project: A Study in the Future of Liberal Arts Teaching and Research, funded by a Digital Humanities Advancement Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (HAA-290378-23).
3 students will be hired to work for 30 hours per week for 9 weeks this summer (June 12 to August 11), and ideally continue on part-time throughout the 2023-24 academic year. Most of the summer work will be in person, and will include weekend trips to Moorhead MN and/or Grinnell IA, although there is some flexibility as well for periods of remote work.
Students will learn to research the social and cultural roles of a Viking Age longship, model digital objects from the Viking Age, and/or learn to program an educational VR experience. We will also discuss scholarship related to the uses of virtual reality as well as the culture and history of the Vikings.
There are three distinct roles we are looking to fill (more details in the attached file):

  1. Subject Matter Expert to help lead the historical and archaeological research,
  2. 3D Artist to model historic artifacts using Blender and Unity,
  3. Software Developer to program VR experiences in C# using Unity

Prior experience in these areas is not required, but pre-existing skills or relevant classwork is highly desirable.  How to apply: Submit application to Austin Mason amason@carleton.edu with a short statement of interest, a list of relevant skills and experience, the name of one Carleton faculty member who can act as a reference for you, and a copy of your unofficial transcript.
