I hope your week is off to a good start. I’m delighted to let you know about the CS Bits & Bytes event this Thursday 5/22 from 3:30pm-4:30pm in Anderson 329. This week we’ll be hearing from Carleton Alum Bret Jackson ’08 who works on some super cool things in the world of extended reality (XR). As always, we’ll have a wide array of treats available. The first 10 minutes or so will be used for people to have a chance to snack and chat with each other, with the talk beginning around 3:40pm. Details on the talk are below. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.
Title: Cross-Reality 3D Sketching: Human-Computer Interfaces to Support Working in Extended Reality

Abstract: Drawing from real-world observation has been used for thousands of years to help explain natural phenomena, communicate insights, and advocate for social change. Although traditionally done with 2D paper and pencils, recent developments in extended reality (XR) show promise in new interaction paradigms. In this talk, I present my vision of ‘cross-reality 3D sketching’—a future where artists use XR displays and tracking systems to create spatial drawings in a 3D body-centric space based on drawing what we see. I will showcase key examples and discuss broader design principles for human-computer interfaces to support this style of interaction, and conclude with reflections on future directions for working across reality, virtuality, and mixed spaces in between.
