There are two conferences happening this fall that we wanted you to be aware of. Both are excellent opportunities to gain a different perspective on computing than you may be able to get in a classroom.
Richard Tapia Celebration of Diversity in Computing: September 10-12, in person, Dallas, TX.
- Note that classes begin Monday, Sept. 15, so this is Wed-Fri the week before classes start in the fall term.
- The CS Department has some funding to help students get there.
- If you are interested in attending (and we hope you are!), please fill out your information in this form so that we can keep you in the loop.
- Registration for the conference opens on April 30, 2025.
Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing: November 4-7, in person, Chicago, IL.
- Note, the conference is Tues-Friday of week 8 of the fall term.

Frequently asked questions:
Q: I don’t identify as female or non-binary, but I think gender diversity in computing is really important. Can I go to Grace Hopper?
A: Yes! Students of all gender identities are welcome, and are eligible to apply for scholarships and for funding from the department.
Q: I’m not sure whether it’s financially feasible for me to go but I want to. Should I indicate my interest anyway?
A: Yes! The department can help to cover some of the costs associated with going, and in cases of financial hardship, please come talk to us and we’ll help you try to find additional sources of funding.
Q: I’m just getting started in CS and haven’t yet taken very many courses. Can I still go to Grace Hopper or Tapia?
A: Yes! Both conferences are targeted at people who are excited about computing, and attendees are at many different stages of experience in this field. Carleton students from a variety of class years and with many different numbers of classes taken have attended in the past.
Q: I have another question that’s not addressed here. Who should I ask?
A: Layla Oesper (loesper) with any additional questions and she’ll help you get them answered.
