CS Tea: Victor Barocas presents "Computational Methods for Aneurysm Mechanics"
Victor Barocas from the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities will be giving a talk titled "Computational Methods for Aneurysm Mechanics".
Aneurysm, an abnormal expansion of a blood vessel, is a common disease and often presents a major management challenge. The aneurysm is largely harmless in most cases, but if it ruptures, the results are catastrophic; on the other hand, particularly for aneurysms of the aorta or of the brain arteries, the repair surgery carries significant risk. The goal of much current research therefore, is to develop better tools to assess the risk of aneurysm rupture and to help weigh that risk against the risks associated with surgical repair. Our group uses computational tools to examine the problem in different ways, drawing on experimental data from humans, animals, and ex vivo tissue tests. I will discuss the different approaches we use and our overall vision for using computational methods to improve patient health.
