CS Bits & Bytes: Aryan Deshwal presents "AI to Accelerate Scientific Discovery and Engineering Design"

Thu, May 1, 2025 • 3:30pm - 4:30pm (1h) • Anderson 329

CS Bits and Bytes hosts a research talk by Aryan Deshwal.

Abstract: A huge range of scientific discovery and engineering design problems ranging from materials discovery and drug design to 3D printing and chip design typically involve searching through a practically incomprehensible number of candidates, where evaluating each candidate is expensive because it requires significant resources. For example, searching the space of materials for a desired property while minimizing the total resource-cost of physical wet-lab experiments for their evaluation. The key challenge is how to select the sequence of experiments to uncover high-quality solutions for a given resource budget. In this talk, I will talk about how machine learning/AI methods can help us find such solutions while minimizing the number of expensive evaluations. Concretely, I will discuss AI driven adaptive experiment design algorithms to tackle this challenge. I will also present results on applying these algorithms to solve high-impact science and engineering applications including nanoporous materials discovery for carbon capture/hydrogen storage, electronic design automation for chip design, and additive manufacturing for 3D printing functional organs. In the end, I will also cover open challenges and future directions that I am excited about.

Join us for treats, beverages, community and conversation.
