CS Bits & Bytes Hosts Bret Jackson '08 on "Cross-Reality 3D Sketching: Human-Computer Interfaces to Support Working in Extended Reality"

Thu, May 22, 2025 • 3:30pm - 4:30pm (1h) • Anderson 329

CS Bits and Bytes hosts a research talk by Bret Jackson '08 entitled "Cross-Reality 3D Sketching: Human-Computer Interfaces to Support Working in Extended Reality"

Time: May 22th, from 3:30-4:30pm

Location: Anderson 329

Abstract:  Drawing from real-world observation has been used for thousands of years to help explain natural phenomena, communicate insights, and advocate for social change. Although traditionally done with 2D paper and pencils, recent developments in extended reality (XR) show promise in new interaction paradigms. In this talk, I present my vision of 'cross-reality 3D sketching'—a future where artists use XR displays and tracking systems to create spatial drawings in a 3D body-centric space based on drawing what we see.  I will showcase key examples and discuss broader design principles for human-computer interfaces to support this style of interaction, and conclude with reflections on future directions for working across reality, virtuality, and mixed spaces in between.

Bio:  Bret Jackson is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Macalester College, specializing in 3D human-computer interaction, data visualization, and computer graphics. His research has a particular focus on virtual (VR) and augmented (AR) reality and answers questions such as how to interact with spatial data more effectively using new computer interfaces. He received his masters and PhD at the University of Minnesota under Daniel Keefe with the Interactive Visualization Lab. Previously, he worked as a software developer for Ultralingua, inc. with Jeff Ondich and received a B.A. in Computer Science from Carleton College. You can find more details about his work and contact information on his website.
